@Fights That Gotta Happen!
|
Tastes change. Interest in a fighter can increase or decrease. At the beginning of 2002, the fight I wanted to see most was then Grand Prix Champion Mark Hunt against Lloyd Van Dams. The fight never happened and at the beginning of 2003, there was another fight that I hoped would materialize, Jerome LeBanner vs. Bob Sapp. At the beginning of 2004, I decided to make a survey and keep the results year after year, so fans of tomorrow would be able to look back and see how tastes have changed. From 2004 to 2006, I have used the Sherdog Forum to collect the data. This was due to the size of their membership at first. The response rate in 2006 was quite low so in 2007 I decided to use another Forum with a large membership: K-1 Fans. I am very pleased to say that this community let produced very good numbers. Kickboxing fans vary as much as any other set of individuals do. Some can pick one fight and be satisfied with that choice. Others want to see several fights. The survey allowed for fans to vote for several fights with more weight on the first choice than on the second, more on the second than the third, and so on. More specifically, 10 points was given to the first choice, 9 points to the second, 8 points to the third and so on.
In the above example, we can see how one fan gave 10 points to Red vs. Blue, his first choice and how each subsequent matchup received one point less. Also notice that Red is of high interest. From the points given, individual scores can also be calculated.
When I first presented the list of individual scores, I used the word gpopularh. This term drew debate because some felt that popularity was related to liking a fighter, not simply wanting to see him fight in the ring. Some supported that claim stating that their top pick included a fight they dreamt (in color even) of getting a well deserved beating. With that in mind, I encourage the reader to consider the individual list an indirect measure of love, hate and curiosity. |
