Rankings Rankings Rankings 2006

Kickboxing fans who take the time to visit www.centralkickboxing.org to look at the rankings often leave with the intent to visit the websites of the sanctioning organizations to compare the rankings. This is highly encouraged. It is in a fanfs best interest to know who all the players are in the sport.

Sanctioning organizations act as governing bodies in the sport and are responsible for more than rankings. They make decisions that affect the sport such as equipment standards and scoring procedures. Today they also act as lobbyists and consultants. Rankings however are one of the most visible responsibilities.

The CKO Rankings are relatively easy to follow. Once a fan grasps the concept that each rank is treated like a title, it is smooth sailing. Kickboxing sanctioning organizations operate a little differently. They are businesses and only if a sanctioning fee is paid will a belt change hands. For instance, if RED is the champion and BLUE defeats him on an event where the promoter didnft pay the sanctioning fee, RED will remain champion. One organization has the unfortunate reputation of having accepted the fee after the event. In other words, BLUE defeated RED on an unsanctioned event and his manager offered the organization the fee afterward in exchange for the title.

Contenders who pay sanctioning fees receive special treatment (ie. rankings) when compared to those who do not pay. Those who fight closer to the organizationfs base of operations are also evaluated more favorably since they are more visible on the radar. Lastly but most obviously, sanctioning bodies have two systems of measurement.

1-     The title is given to the winner of the title match.

2-     The other rankings are based on evaluations.

Below you will find the January 2006 rankings for the CKO, IKF, WKA, ISKA, WAKO and WBC. Keep in mind that the CKO only tracks the 90+ weight category while the others split the division into 2 or 3 weight divisions and a few rules divisions. They may also have a fighter ranked higher than #1. "World Champions" are therefore given the rank of #0 on the lists below.
